今年も無事木工コースが全て終了しました。

日本の道具を使いこなしたい方、基礎を徹底的に学びたい方、来年のコースへの参加を心よりお待ちしております。

The last course of this year has just finished.

The course included making Kannas from curving its body, making crafts using the joinery technique the students learned in class and a lot of sharpening.

We are looking forward to having courses with coming students next year.

前回の森つくりは階段作りにみんなで汗を流しましたが、最近の暑さは別次元ですね...

ここ河口湖も例年と比べるとかなり気温が高くなっております。

このような中で長い間そとで作業するのは危ないと判断しましたので、今週末7月28日のみんなの森をつくる会は、流しそうめんで涼む会になります。

竹の割り方、節の落とし方を勉強したあと、美味しいそうめんを食べましょう。

午後からは日陰の林で枝打ちもおこなう予定です。

Here in Kawaguchiko, the temperature is much higher than usual.We decided that it is not safe to work outside for a long time in such conditions, sohad a “Nagashi Somen” party to cool off.

After learning how to split bamboo and remove knots, we ate delicious somen noodles.

In the afternoon, we went to the shady forest to prune branches.

アメリカ、フランス、台湾、ギリシャからいらした5人の生徒さん達との4週間コースがはじまりました。

Fully booked 4 week course has started with five students from  France, Taiwan, America and Greece.

今月の竪穴式住居プログラム、ついに茅葺き作業に入りました。

お近くの茅葺き職人さんや大工さんにお話を伺いつつ本も参考にしながら、試行錯誤してなんとか形になってきました。

今年は茅の量が足りないため全体を葺くことはできません。次回は冬。茅刈りを行います。

In this month's Jomon House Program, we started the thatching process.

We have managed to get it into shape by using books as reference, while talking to local thatchers and carpenters.

This year, we are not able to thatch the entire building due to a lack of material so next time will be in winter, when we can cut pampas grass again.

5月の森つくりは、

・新緑の森散策

先月はスイスイ歩けた森の道は新緑の成長によって、今では葉っぱが生い茂る迷路のような道になりました。

The content of the day was packed with topics such as,

・Walking in the forest where the new sprouts came out.

・Preparing the transplanting of katsura trees.

・Explaning soil properties

・The making of “Shigara”

The paths in the forest, which were easy to walk on last month, now became a maze of paths as we had to avoid the leaves.

つづきまして、竪穴式住居プロジェクトの報告です！

今回の参加者は東京・埼玉・フィンランドから1人ずつ、フランスから3人の6名で、内容は盛り土づくりと屋根垂木の炭化・設置でした。

垂木がかかるとグッと一段家になりますね。

Next, a report on the Jomon House project.

This time there were six participants, one each from Tokyo, Saitama, and Finland, and three from France. The project consisted of building embarkment and carbonizing and installing roof rafters.

今回は箱結びを用いた躯体の組み立て。

無事、問題なく建たせることができてホッとしました。

参加者の方はそれぞれ新潟、横浜、ドイツ、そして山梨からお越しくださり、活気あるワークショップになりました！

The first day of the Jomon house project has come to an end

This time we assembled the frame using knot called 箱結び Hakomusubi.

We were relieved to be able to successfully build the structure without any problems.

Participants came from Niigata, Yokohama, Germany, and Yamanashi to make it lively day.

その原点、縄文の暮らしに立ち返って「日本の木の文化」をより深く理解したい。縄文の暮らしを体験したい。

そんな願いより始まります…「竪穴式住居プロジェクト」

From the beginning of time, Japanese people have lived together with forests.

We would like to go back to the starting point, the Jomon era lifestlye, and gain a deeper understanding of the "Japanese Wood culture.

With such as wish…the "Jōmon Dugout Shelter Project" is now launched.

今年最初のArtist-in-Residenceが終了しました！

最初の参加者はイギリスの木工家 Johnさんとアメリカの建築家Jimmyさん🇬🇧🇺🇸

どちらも細部まで気を配ながらじっくり1ヶ月間、「木と」そして「自分と」向き合っていました。

The first participants were John, a woodworker from England, and Jimmy, an architect from the U.S. 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Both of them spent a month carefully dealing with the wood and with themselves, paying attention to every detail.

日中は木工に真剣に向き合い、夜はみんな一緒にご飯をかこむ。

あっという間に今年最初の5日間組手コースが終了しました。

毎回すばらしい生徒さん達に恵まれて有り難いばかりです。「木が好きな人に悪い人はいない」

そう感じる今日この頃です。

The first Joinery course in 2024 has ended.

We are grateful to have amazing students every time. It seems that people who like wood can not be bad.

時折雹がちらつくかなり寒いなかでしたが、プロジェクト初日は、参加者19名+NHKの撮影隊という大所帯での幕開けでした。

前半は、森を歩きながら𠮷野と専門家による森の知識を共有しました。

火の周りでお昼を食べながら温まったあとは後みんなの森をどう作っていくか作戦会議をして将来をより具体的にイメージしていきました

今回の気づきとしましては、

恥ずかしながら、雨で栄養にとんだ表土が流れてしまうことの対策が全然できていなかったことです。

よって次回は『森の土壌改善』をテーマに活動していきます。

The first day of the project opened with a large group of 19 participants plus a film crew from NHK.

In the first half of the day, the founder Tak and an expert shared their knowledge of the forest while walking through the forest.Afterwards, we had a strategy meeting on how to create a forest for everyone, and began to envision the future in more concrete terms.

One of the things we realized this time was that the rain had made it difficult for us to nourish our forests,

We are ashamed to say that we had not taken any measures to prevent the topsoil, rich in nutrients, from being washed away by the rain. Therefore, next time we will work on the theme of "improving forest soil”.

2月も多くの方々にまなびの杜へお越しいただきました。

鍛治小屋ワークショップ、アーティスト・イン・レジデンス、工房見学等、理由はさまざまですが「木がすき」という心はみんな同じ。

河口湖まで足を運んでいただけて、一同有難い限りです。

Their reasons to visit here are varied, but they all share the same love of woods.

メンターには代表 𠮷野がつき、毎週末に制作のふりかえり/アドバイスをしていきます。

敷地内には200脚を超える世界各地の椅子、著書、充実の工房設備があり、どんな椅子制作にも対応可能です。

Get inspired by our nature, culture and other participants to create your unique chair.

Tak Yoshino, a master craftsman, will be a mentor, providing feedback and advice every weekend.

The site has over 200 chairs from around the world, books, and a well-equipped workshop, making it possible to create any kind of chair!

こんこんと牡丹雪が降りしきる中、今年も鍛治小屋プロジェクトが始動しました！

今回は岐阜、高山、そしてフランスから合わせて7名の参加者がいらしてくださり、気温は1°Cでも現場は熱いエナジーに満ちていました。

伝統的手道具だけで大工さんと建てる鍛治小屋プロジェクト。

With large snowflakes falling steadily, the forge construction project started up again this year.

This year, a total of seven participants came from Takayama, Gifu, and France, and the site was filled with hot energy despite the 1°C temperature.

The project is to build a forge hut with carpenters using only traditional hand tools.

どんな木も見捨てない心。どんな形でも扱える技術。

代表の𠮷野は森を購入してから森のなかに製材機を設置し、すてられてしまう木を救助してアートに変身させる活動を続けています。

The heart that will not abandon any tree. The technique to handle any form. That’s what Master Tak has.

Since purchasing the forest, Tak has installed a sawmill in the forest to rescue trees that would otherwise be discarded and transform them into art.

本格的に活動を開始した今年、スタッフ全員でめまぐるしい日々を駆け抜けました。

工房の完成、木工教室スタート、手道具のみの伝統工法でつくる鍛治小屋計画の始動、森のボランティア活動、直近では石積みワークショップなど、内容てんこもりの毎日！

加えて、夏に念願の認定取得をしました。これにより私たちNPOに寄付をしてくださった方の税金控除の対象となります。

This year, when we started our activities in earnest, all of us had the busiest days of our lives.

We completed the workshop, started woodworking classes in English, launched a plan to build a forge using only hand tools and traditional construction methods, organizing the forest with volunteers and most recently, held a dry stone wall workshop!

We could not have done so many events and had so many visitors without the support of people from all over the world. Thank you very much. All of us would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

押し入れにある鉋を掘り起こして、40年以上の経験を持つ職人と一緒に鉋の魅力を肌で感じてみませんか。

Handplanes are the most time-consuming Japanese hand tool to learn, so that many people buy one and leave it behind due to lack of information and experience.

Why don't you dig out that plane in the closet and experience firsthand the charm of planing with a craftsman with over 40 years of experience.

We believe it is our mission to convey the charm of Japanese wood culture, which has been developed together with hand tools such as planes.

年内最後のArtist-in-Residenceはノルウェーからお越しのJuliaさん。

椅子作りは初挑戦でしたが1ヶ月でラウンドバックチェアを原寸大モデル ＋ クリの座面作りまで終了しました。

The last participant of Artist-in-Residence of the year was Julia from Norway🇳🇴

It was her first challenge to make a chair, but within a month, she finished making a full-scale model of a round-back chair and a chestnut seat for her complete project.

昨日で無事、今年の海外向け授業がすべて終了いたしました。多くの素敵な出会いに恵まれましたことに心より感謝したいと思います。

Yesterday, we have completed all of our woodworking classes conducted in English for this year. Thank you so much again everyone for choosing us. We are so grateful for all the encounters we had this year.

ボランティア後半には

・森の中の枝を全て拾って炭づくり

・構内道路のレンガ敷き

・植栽部分の整備

・羊の脱走防止フェンスの取り替え

と内容盛りだくさんでしたが、大人数で仲良く協力しながらどれも予想をはるかに超えるスピードで完了しました！

In the latter half of the volunteer activity, we did

・Picking up all the branches in the forest and making charcoal

・Laying bricks for the roads on the premises

・Maintenance of planted areas

・Replacing fences to prevent sheep from escaping

The volunteers worked together in large groups and completed all of these tasks at a much faster pace than expected!

今週はイラン🇮🇷 アメリカ🇺🇸 ニュージーランド🇳🇿の３カ国からまなびの杜へ、4名のボランティアの方がお手伝いしに来てくれています！

この日は森の中でサクラを20本ほど移植する作業を行いました！

This week, four volunteers from Iran 🇮🇷 USA 🇺🇸 New Zealand 🇳🇿 have come to Mt. Fuji Wood Culture Society!

On this day, we worked on transplanting about 20 Sakura trees(cherry trees in Japanese) in the forest!

2週間のArtist-in-Residenceが終了しました！

私たちの森で過ごしインスピレーションを得て製作した『まなびの杜チェア』。

1ヶ月半離れ離れだった子どもを想って作った『こども椅子』。

短い期間でしたが少しの助言と熟考の末、2人とも松の木を使用した原寸大のモデルまで完成させました！

最後にはそれぞれの子どもたちも合流し、美しい家族愛を垣間見ることができました☺️文化や芸術は異なる美しさでも、愛の美しさは世界共通でした✨

木に囲まれた快適環境で、じぶんの心が思うままに、あなたも制作活動をしてみませんか？
期間は1ヶ月以上から。日本を含めどなたでも参加お待ちしております🌳

The “Mt. Fuji Wood Culture Society Chair" was inspired by spending time in our forest.

The "Children's Chair" was made with the thought of her son who had been separated from her for a month and a half.

After a short period of time with a little advice and a lot of consideration, both of them completed a full-size model made of pine wood!

In the end, their children joined them and we were able to catch a glimpse of the beautiful family love. ☺️ While culture and art may be beautiful in different ways, the beauty of love seems universal ✨

Why don't you come and create as your heart desires in a comfortable environment surrounded by trees?
The minimum period of stay is one month. Anyone from all over the world is welcome to participate🌳

4週間コース終了後のアーティスト・イン・レジデンス プログラム第１週が終わり、残すところあと1週間になりました。

アイデアを固め、製図し、モデルを制作するところまで2人とも達成してくれました。

今回は2週間だけなので完成形まで到達するかわかりませんが、どこまでいくかな…!? 最後の1週間も2人の進歩が楽しみです！

With the four-week course complete and the first week of the artist-in-residence program over, there is only one week left to go.

Both of the participants have achieved the point where they have finalized their ideas, drafted drawings, and created models.

They have only two weeks to complete their work, so not sure if they will be able to reach the finished product, but let's see how far they will get! Looking forward to seeing their progress in the last week!

4週間コース後半は組み手加工のレッスン＆それぞれが興味のある分野を追求する時間になりました。

買ってからすぐには使えない日本の道具に苦戦しながらも、今回の生徒さんたちは熱いパッションを心に最後まで真剣に学んでくれました🔥

3人の生徒のうち2人は連続して2週間のArtist-in-Residenceプログラムに参加されます。どんな作品ができあがるか楽しみです！

😁The second half of the 4-week course was a time for joinery work lessons & time for each student to pursue his/her own area of interest!

Although they struggled with Japanese tools that people can not use properly right after they bought them, the students learned earnestly until the end with passion in their hearts🔥

Two of the three students will be participating in the Artist-in-Residence program for two consecutive weeks. We are looking forward to seeing what kind of work they will produce! 😁

This time, we had a full house for the Wood Culture Exchange Night! We had 10+ guests from the neighborhood and from other prefectures, and we believe that the event was a great opportunity to learn more about the wood cultures of Lake Erie, Germany, and Taiwan, respectively!

週末は自由学園の公開講座に通う有志の方々がイベントを主催し、学びの杜にいらしてくださいました！🌳

２種のカレープレートランチセットから始まり、” 実物の名作椅子を学ぶ ” 椅子の学び舎見学会、そして カッティングボードorバターナイフから選ぶ木工体験を執り行わせていだきました！

木の文化に触れるぎゅぎゅっと内容の詰まった5時間は瞬く間に過ぎていきましたが、皆さまのように探究心溢れるお客様を迎えられて嬉しく思います✨

またのお越しを心よりお待ちしております‼️

The weekend featured a "Come join us at the Chair Laboratory,” starting with a lunch plate with two types of curry, a tour of the Chair Laboratory, and a woodworking experience with a choice of a cutting board or a butter knife!

The five hours of the event, packed with a wealth of information on Japanese wood culture, passed in the blink of an eye!

We were delighted to have guests as inquisitive as they were ✨

早くも1ヶ月集中コースが折り返し地点を過ぎました！この2週間は主に講師の𠮷野が得意とする多様な鉋(かんな)を用いて自由自在に加工する楽しさを追求してもらいました！

Running from the 13th September to the11th October the 4-week intensive course is half over. They have learned some basic Japanese woodworking techniques as well as sharpening and customizing tools such as making flat planes into 2D and 3D planes.

本日が今回のArtist-in-Residence programの最終日でした！

クレアさんは、座面は丸鑿で仕上げた桐材、他の部分は栗材でローチェアを作りきりました！

ジェームズさんは、チェリー材に小鉋でテクスチャーを入れた同じくローチェアを作りました！

Today is the last day of current Artist-in-Residence program, and both of two participants beautifully finished their project.

Clare made a low chair from Paulownia for seat with gauge texture and chestnut for other parts!

James made a low chair as well from cherry wood with grooves by a small handplane!

私たちの1日体験コースでは、主に日本独自の軟鉄と鋼で構成される刃物で木を削る快感を体験してもらっています！

40年を超える木工経験を積んだ講師が愛用する道具を実際に手で触って、使ってみて、作品を作るという貴重な経験を皆さんもしてみませんか！河口湖にてお待ちしております🌳

In our 1day experience class, participants experience the pleasure of sharpening wood with incredibly sharpe and unique Japanese blades composed of soft iron and hard steel!

4週間コース、終了しました。超集中の木工講座、どんどん技術を向上させる受講生たち。夜は沢山のパーティー。道具屋巡り、ハイキング。

日本のものづくりの素晴らしさを単なる技術だけでなく、その精神性まで体験してもらえたと思います。参加してくれて有難う！

The 4-week course has ended. The students are improving their skills in this super-intensive woodworking course!We believe that the participants were able to experience the excellence of Japanese craftsmanship not only in terms of mere techniques , but also in terms of its spirituality. 第3週目の最終日は、講師 @takyoshinoが研究してきた椅子についてのレッスンになりました。独特な深い立体構造の座面を生徒それぞれが作成した四方反り鉋で仕上げてくれました！

For the last class of 3rd week, @takyoshino is teaching his techniques and knowledge regarding his speciality, Chairs. Each students did their best to create its unique and deep three dimensions' structure with their compass planes they made!

4週間コースの前半が終了しました。

受講生の皆さんは素晴らしい集中力とともに、日に日に上達しています。

1週目は日本の木工の特色である道具の仕込みから学び、2週間を通して日本の木工の基本である、道具を使う際の注意点や体の使い方を中心に学びました!

最後まで楽しく日本の木工を学んでもらいたいと思います！

The first half has already passed, and all of students here are getting better and better everyday!

This course was kicked off with setting tools up to use properly which is a distinctive feature of Japanese tools, "Setting up correctly before use", and this two weeks were mainly focused on the fundamental principles of Japanese woodworking, such as points where we pay attention to and body movements to use tools.

参加者全員が、三枚組、五枚組、三枚蟻組、五枚蟻組と、コーナーごとに異なる組手を用いて木箱を作り上げました！

様々なバックグラウンドを持つ参加者が集い、交流し、技術を磨いていく姿はとても刺激的でした！また、組手のクオリティも本当に素晴らしいものでした！

All participants achieved making a wooden box with different joineries on each corner, Sanmai-kumi, Gomai-kumi, Sanmai-Ari-kumi, and Gomai-Ari-kumi.

It was very stimulating to see people with various backgrounds mixing, interacting, and refining their woodworking skills, and the quality of joineries was absolutely fabulous!!!

We were all excited for this moment to actually have our official t-shirts and try them on!

毎月第3週の週末にまなびの杜の建築に携わってくださった大工さんが集まり、手道具だけで作る鍛治場小屋計画に挑戦中です！みなさまもぜひご参加くださいませ！

The carpenters who built our Woodworking Studio and Chair Laboratory gather every 3rd weekends and work for another project using only traditional hand tools.

何かあったらすぐにメモをして熱心に日本の技術を学んでいる2人の姿勢、素敵です！

A lovely couple from France came to Mt. Fuji Wood Culture Society for two weeks!

We love the way they are eagerly learning Japanese techniques, taking notes as soon as they learn something!

モデル制作から始まり、製図、木取り、加工、組み立て確認までやり遂げて、1ヶ月の期間で本人と奥様のために2脚の素晴らしいウインザーチェアを作り上げました！

期間中は羊の毛刈りを一緒に楽しんだり、木の文化交換会を開催して情報交換したり、隙あらばみんなでお酒を交わしたり。思い描いていた夢が現実になっていることを実感し、幸せに満ち溢れています。

Even though he is a history professor and didn’t have much woodworking experience, he created two wonderful Windsor chairs for himself and his wife only in one month!

During the period, we sheared sheep together, held our first "Wood Culture Exchange" to share each culture, and had drinks whenever we had a chance.

We are filled with happiness, realizing that the dream we had envisioned has become a reality.

今回の5日間の組手コースには、スペインとフィリピンから2名が全日、最初の2日間のみアメリカから1名、計3名が参加してくれました！

This five days joinery course was attended by three participants: two from Spain and the Philippines for all days, and one from the U.S. for the first two days!

鉋5日コース、カリフォルニアより二人の参加者を迎えて終了しました。

仕込みから、平面出し、厚み決め、小鉋の仕込み、反り台へのカスタマイズ、曲面削りなど私の経験の全てを詰め込みました。

Put as much efforts as possible into teaching how to set up various sorts of Kanna, and to make perfect flat surfaces and desired thickness with them.

切ったばかりの生木から作品づくりをするグリーンウッドワーク。まなびの杜では毎月第1・第3水曜日19:00~21:00に道具貸し出し無料でワークショップを開催しています。一緒に自分の生活道具を自分で作ってみませんか！

Green Woodworking is a sort of woodwokring to create things from freshly cut wet wood. We hold workshops on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month from 19:00 to 21:00, with tools rental free of charge. Why don't you join us and make your own tools for daily life by yourself?

建築はほぼほぼ終了して工房内の環境づくりに入りました。木工機械は基本的に旧工房から引き続き使用するものばかりですが、中には新しくメンバーに加わるものもあります。その中でも目玉なのがこちらCNCです！使いこなすにはまだまで研究が必要ですが、今後の活躍に期待です。

The construction is almost finished and we have started to create the environment inside the workshop. The woodworking machines will basically continue to be used from the old workshop, but some of them are new additions to the team. The highlight among them is the CNC! It will take some research to master it, but we are looking forward to seeing it in action in the future.

先日のワークショップで焼いた杉板、木工スタジオの外壁への施工完了しました！経年でどんな変化が出るのか楽しみです！

The cedar boards fired at the recent workshop have been installed on the exterior wall of the woodworking studio! We are looking forward to seeing how it will change over time!

焼杉は杉板の表面を炭化させたもので、耐久性、防火性能が高いとされています。日本における木材の外装材は耐久性の高い輸入材が多いようですが、焼杉を使ってみてはいかかでしょうか、ということで開催しました。焼いた杉板は、木工スタジオの外壁に使わせて頂きます！

Yaki-Sugi is a cedar board whose surface is carbonized and is considered to be durable and fire resistant. Many of the exterior materials used for wood in Japan are imported materials with high durability, but we thought it would be a good idea to try using Yaki-Sugi. They will be used for the exterior walls of our woodworking studio.

台風が近づく中、椅子の学び舎の名誉館長である島崎信氏に来て頂き、今後の展望についてお話をして頂きました。参加者の方々とも活発な意見交換をすることができました。今後の椅子の学び舎、まなびの杜の展開が楽しみです。

With a typhoon approaching, Mr. Makoto Shimazaki, honorary director of the Chair Laborataory, came and spoke about his vision for the future. We had a lively exchange of opinions with the participants. We look forward to the future development of the Chair Laboratory and Mt.Fuji Wood Cullture Society.

講師として縄文大工の雨宮国広さんに来て頂いて、斧での伐倒、斧での製材の勉強会を開催いたしました。手道具で時間をかけて製材していくことで、木の有難みを感じて頂くことができたのではないかと思います。

Mr. Kunihiro Amamiya, a Jomon carpenter, came as an instructor and held a workshop on felling trees with an axe and hewing.　We believe that by taking the time to this, the participants were able to feel the appreciation of the wood.

粟井環境財団から寄付して頂いた広葉樹の苗木20本をまなびの杜敷地内に植樹しました。子供と一緒に成長していくのが楽しみです。

We planted 20 hardwood saplings donated by the Awai Environmental Foundation on our property. We look forward to seeing the children and the saplings grow together.
